Patent reform bill goes to Obama for signature
Ars Technica coverage of the patent bill headed to Obama for signature:
The only winners are the large companies—which supported the switch to “first to file” and other procedural changes—and the patent office itself, which will enjoy a larger budget and greater autonomy. The rest of us lost, because almost all the serious reform ideas wound up on the cutting room floor.
Hard to find the words how shitty this bill is. The new nine month window to challenge sounds good but I’m not sure if that means even if you were in the right, but missed the window, you’d still lose out.
I didn’t think it could get worse but they found a way.

No kidding! 9 months to challenge. That’s great if someone is watching all the patents that are going into the patent office. Otherwise, the group sending in the patent, waits 9 months, then goes after every company they think is infringing. Now, if it’s 9 months from the time someone files a suit against you, then that’s not bad.
As far as this helping out large companies. Look at what Google and Apple/Microsoft/others had to do. Buy up all those patents just so they could “protect” themselves.
The only way to fix this is to remove software patents completely. Software is protected by Copyright and doesn’t need any other type of protection.
