iOS Monetization Recap and Slides

Update: New version of this presentation is now online which has more up-to-date numbers.

iOS Monetization

A few weeks ago I gave a talk on iOS Monetization for the local Mac developer user group, MPSIG. Below are the slides and a recap via Vimeo. The recap is kinda raw, recorded in a single take, but hopefully still useful to those who want to listen in.

The talk is in two parts. Part one covers the basic methods to monazite on the App Store and the pros/cons associated with each type. Part two jumps into a case study of my own iOS app Dex, and how it has faired via the free download with ads + in-app purchase model.

The short version is that Dex is very successful right now. With a mix of iAd, AdMob and in-app purchase Dex makes about ~$124/day, with numbers trending upwards.

I never explicitly said so in the recording but I prioritize iAds over AdMob. I only show AdMob when I don’t get an iAd from Apple or they are running the app on a pre-4.0 device and thus iAds is not available.
