Post Billable Release Thoughts
Well Billable has been out for 2 days now and it has been a real fun release. Lots of press on the Mac news site and even a few positive blog posts as well. As of right now I am also on the front page of Apple’s Mac OS X Downloads page which is a huge honor. (Flickr photo for the scrap book.)
There have been a few small bug reports that I’m looking into. The one that seems most prevalent is creating an invoice and having it sporadically show an invoice total but not show the line item services. Users can delete this bum invoice and creating a new invoices works fine. I’ll be looking into this and hope to have a 1.0.1 out there real soon.
As for the 1.1 release the biggest feature requests by far have been invoice numbers and tax options. I’m looking into both, plus a few other goodies and off the top of my head am shooting for a 4 week time frame. I want keep 1.1 a small release and get these two features out ASAP.
Overall I’m really psyched. Thanks to everyone for your support and interest in Billable.

Ah! Just sent a mail about invoice numbers, dang, wish I’d seen this first!
I completely forget about tax, but yeah thats a vital one! Looking forward to 1.1!
I am looking forward to v1.1. This might actually be a good replacement for the ancient filemaker 5 thing I use for invoices currently. On top of the two main things you are adding to 1.1, would an optional Shipping cost field be a possibility? I do both services and some shipping of finished products so it would be a benefit for me. :)
Wonderful product! Perfectly intuitive and easy to use as far as I can tell so far.
How’s about a discount functionality? I work with some nonprofits and like to show the pre-discount total and the post-discount subtotal if that’s possible for tax purposes.
Also, will you be building a way to graph or at least aggregate all the information from multiple clients so I can see trends in my billing? That would be very helpful! I have iBiz now, but I love your functionality so much more! Great work!
Thanks for the feedback guys. I’ll keep it in mind as I work on future versions.
Excellent application, really like the ease of use. No doubt you’ll be getting a heap of suggestions to add features, hope you can retain the essential simplicity through the process.
How about supporting other currencies? I know it sounds trite and tired, but it looks like a minor change to me (although it’s not always so) and it’s certainly the one thing that has turned me off from the product in the entire experience.
Billable currently use what ever currency you have setup in your System Preferences. I am considering multiple currencies but it requires some more thought (like how do I show a total of services in three different currencies?).
Thanks for the feedback!
Also, when I try to put my logo in and preview a sample invoice, the logo itself takes up 2/3 of the page. I’ve tried saving the logo to all sorts of sizes and dpi in Photoshop and re-loading it into Billable, but it always shows up the same size. Maybe this concern is better for the blog, so sorry if this is misplaced … :)
Fantastic software Mike! Easy, intuitive, Mac like and it just works. Keep up the fantastic work!!

adrial: There was a webkit cache bug that would cause the logo to not be “refreshed” that fixed in 1.0.1. Your scaling issue is noted. I hope to add some stuff to make it easier in a future version.
Couple of requests for this lovely app: * As well as invoice numbers, can we get client account numbers too? * A few more lines for addresses would be good, 3 lines are too few for me. Was there a reason why you didn’t just use a text field as that would seem the most flexible option? * I like how you can write html into the invoice’s message field, however I also notice that the html is then displayed in the plain-text copy. If you could get the html stripped out for plain text, or even use something like markdown that looks sensible as plain text, that would be excellent.
Thanks for your hard work, it is very much appreciated.
