Introduction to Subversion Screencast

The following is an Introduction to Subversion screencast. It is targeted mainly at those who are new to version control, covering the conceptual ideas of version control, and then a walkthrough of examples from the desktop of OS X. The running time is about 18 minutes.

Thanks for a informative screencast. I followed hivelogic a few days ago to install svn. Now this video helped me getting started with svn.

  2. One question on the initial import—

Other svn introductions all seem to recommend that when doing the initial import of a project, you put the actual files in a “trunk” directory, then create parallel “tags” and “branches” dirs, and import all three. In your video you just imported the project directly without bothering with trunk/tags/branches.

Is this the way you’d normally do it, or just something that kept the video from being too long? I’m finally switching from CVS, so this kind of stuff is not quite clear to me yet.

  3. Tom, yes in my “real” repositories I use trunk, tags and branches. I did not do them in this demo due to time. If I were to do it I’d feel obliged to explain why and the screencast is already ~17 min long.

As mentioned, if you really want to get a handle on Subversion you should checkout the book. (Bad pub intended.)

Thanks from a fellow Philadelphian, now I don’t have to explain it to new people!

Just a quicky. Here’s the Coral Cache, should help lessen the strain on your servers/bandwidth.

That was great, please do more, I really enjoyed it.

  9. Totally unrelated to the subversion, how did you make the actual screen cast?

    Which program did you use?

  10. Ryan, I’m already starting a post about how I did it. Should be up in the next day or so.

Thanks for the screencast, it will be my start into subversion.

  13. Mike, thanks for a great screencast, it’s been very useful for introducing a couple of colleagues to SVN and version control in general. I’ve just sent a small token of appreciation your way via PayPal.

If the donation model works out for you, please consider developing a follow-up to this video (perhaps on the topics mentioned in the comments above). Also, a similar screencast for Darcs would be welcome indeed, as it is rapidly gaining momentum as the non-centralized, super-easy-to-use alternative to SVN.

  14. Excellent. It was the push I needed to get started.

  15. Thanks, Mike, informative SC. been using svn for over a year but I have never run into a conflict before, so the resolution method you outline was helpful for me. I currently have my home directory in svn on RAID5 at home and check it out over https at work or on the road. Works very well.

I have Paul Graham’s excellent “Hackers and Painters” (on your Amazon Wishlist) and can send to you as a “donation” for the SC?

    Great work!

  17. Since I was born and raised there, I think you need to learn how to spell “Berkeley”!!!

    Otherwise, a very informative movie!

  18. Woops. Sorry about that spelling error. I doubt it will get fixed sadly as it’s too much work to re-edit and compress the movie. Thanks anyways.

Thank you for making this available! It was a great overview, and provided a good frame work for someone who is unfamiliar with both Subversion, and CVS.
