Tech jargon and full costs analysis
My mom emailed me tonight. Apparently they sent out an email to everyone in her office saying that they had to watch their email limit of XX MBs on the server. Mom of course sees KBs when looking at her screen and wanted to know if this effected her.
Tip 1: If you are dealing with a large, diverse user base do not assume they understand tech jargon. Have empathy for their position. Only ask everyone to do something when absolutely necessary.
More to the point though, why in the world is any network administrator sucking productivity out of every worker about some dumb storage limit when disks are so cheap?!?!
As of September 2005 Apple is quoted at $1.86 per GB for an Xserve RAID. Imagine the cost analysis of the productivity of thousands of employees (reading the email, trying to figure out how to perform the action it requests, and then actively doing it) to the brain dead cost of adding more storage.
Tip 2: Always keep in mind the grand scheme of your actions. This come even more into play when you perform an action (sending mass emails, publishing a blog entry, and adding a feature) that will effect many people.
