Macworld 2006 Thoughts
I watched the keynote this afternoon and here are some random thoughts:
- You get a remote for Front Row with the new
Powerbooks, er I mean, MacBook Pro — why not set it up so that you could use the remote for Keynote presentations on the road? - For all this “performance per watt” talk that Steve Jobs dishes out it sure is disheartening not see any mention about how long the battery will last in the new portable. I hope he is keeping quiet to surprise us all when it ships but I’m doubtful.
- I’m with Erik, in that I don’t like the name “MacBook Pro.” How do you even pluralize that?
- I bought the iLife upgrade, but have so far passed on the iWork upgrade. There just wasn’t enough new stuff in there to warrant $80. Maybe when I’m on an Intel Mac I’ll pay up for native apps, but for now I’ll make due with Keynote 2 (I never use Pages).
- Josh was the first to point out to me the irony in Apple’s closing stock price today, $80.86.
- I think the iMac continues to be one hell of a computer for $1299. I love the fact that they added DVI-out and now support an extended display on a second LCD (even one as big as Apple’s 23-inch). I may actually consider getting one now.
- I really want to find out how easy it might be to get Windows running on the new iMac. I’m due to buy a Windows computer this year just for Win/IE testing and if it’s not too hard I’d use the iMac in a dual boot workflow in a heart beat. Of course best case scenario would be Virtual PC for Intel Macs (or something similar) but I’m not holding my breath — that might take a while.
All in all, a good day for Apple. I’m not as eager as some to jump to Intel but eventual it’ll happen. I’m anxious to hear reports from the field to the actually speeds in the coming weeks.
